Kata Ganti Orang: Each other dan One another

Kata ganti orang (pronoun) EACH OTHER DAN ONE ANOTHER sering kita jumpai dalam text formal mapun informal. Kata ganti each other dan one another disebut dalam tata bahasa Inggris sebagai Reciprocal Pronoun. Each other dalam bahasa Indonesia diterjemahkan sebagai saling; sedangkan one another diterjemahkan sebagai satu sama lain. Each other hanya untuk dua orang saja, sedangkan jika lebih dari dua, kita menggunakan one another. Namun dalam modern English, perbedaan each other dan one another mulai tidak dibedakan.

Perhatikan penggunaan each other dan one another dalam kalimat-kalimat berikut:

• Lutfi and Rita love each other. (Lutfi dan Rita saling mencintai).
• On Idul Fitri Day, Moslems shake hands one another. (Pada Hari Raya Idul Fitri, Muslim berjabat tangan satu sama lain.)
• We must help one another. (Kita harus tolong menolong satu sama lain.) --> Lebih dari dua orang
• We must help each other. (Kirta harus saling tolong menolong.) --> Hanya dua orang
• Indonesia and the USA have agreed to repect each other.
• The couple looked at each other, then burst out laughing.
• Why don't we share ideas with one another?
• Both groups finally decided to help each other.

Ingat each other dan one another digunakan setelah kata kerja baik kata kerja tanpa kata depan maupun kata kerja yang selalu diikuti oleh kata depan (laugh at, share with, rely on, dan banyak lagi.)

Reciprocal Pronoun: each other dan one another (saling, satu sama lain) dalam bentuk possessive (kepunyaan) nya menggunakan apostrof s. Contoh: each other's; one another's. Perhatikan contoh-contoh nya dalam kalimat-kaliat berikut:

• They appreciate other other's privacy.
• Dina and Dana admire each other's beauty.
