1. Put someone/ something in the shade
Kalau kita terjemahkan word for word artinya jadi janggal: “Meletakkan seseoran/ sesuatu di tempat teduh”. Arti yang sebenarnya bukan itu tapi “Membuat seseorang atau sesuatu jadi kurang berharga/bernilai atau menjadi kurang penting. Mungkin dalam kalimat akan menjadi lebih jelas. Mary is very beautiful. I think she will put the other girls in the shade. (Mari sangat cantik. Saya rasa dia akan membuat cewek-cewek lain kurang diperhatikan atau cewe-cewek lain jadi kurang bernilai (dalam hal kecantikan).
Contoh lain: This contractor is very experienced and has had no bad performance in any projects it ever worked in. I believe it is the one that put the other contractors in the shade in terms of quality. (Kontractor ini sangat berpengalaman dan belum pernah mempunyai reputasi buruk pada proyek manapun yang pernah dikerjakannya. Saya yakin ia dapat membuat kontraktor-kontraktor lain tersingkir dalam hal kualitas.)
2. In someone’s shoes
Berada dalam posisi orang lain (khususnya dalam situasi yang tidak menyenangkan atau situasi sulit)
Kita sering mengatakan jika saya berada dalam posisi mu, saya akan tanyakan langsung mengenai hal ini. Nah bayangkan kalau kita tidak mencoba memahami idiom ini; terjemahannya jadi lucu, yaitu berada dalam sepatu orang lain. Contoh-contoh dalam kalimat berikut bisa membuat Anda memahami arti in someone’s shoes.
Contoh:
- If I were in your shoes, I would soon pop her questions (Jika saya berada dalam posisi Anda, saya akan segera melamarnya.) Contoh kalimat ini orang kedua dalam kalimat di atas dalam posisi yang kurang menyenangkan. Misalnya persaingan dalam mendapatkan cinta; kalau gak segera dilamar bisa dilamar orang lain. Kira-kira begitu.
Contoh lain:
- Finance Manager: “The company is facing a financial crisis. It almost cannot pay its 100 employees. We are not sure what will happen next month with our sales keeping dropping off.” (Perusahaan sedang mengalami krisis keuangan. Hampir tidak dapat membayar gaji 100 karyawan. Saya tidak tahu apa yang akan terjadi di bulan depan dengan kondisi penjualan kita yang terus menurun.”)
- Administrative Manager: “I know it’s difficult for you to decide. You will not lay off some of your workers but with the current number of employees, you won’t be able to pay their salaries with increasingly low profit as the sales have dropped for the last 4 months.”Saya tahu ini sulit bagi Anda untuk mengambil keputusan, Anda tidak akan mengurangi beberapa karyawan Anda tapi dengan kondisi jumlah karyawan yang ada, Anda tidak akan mampu membayar gaji dengan laba yang semakin berkurang kareana penjualan telah turun selama 4 bulan terakhir.”)
- Finance Manager: If you put yourself in my shoes, what would you do to save this company? (Jika Anda menempatkan diri Anda dalam posisi saya, apa yang akan Anda lakukan untuk menyelamatkan perusahaan ini?)
- Administrative Manager: I don’t know because I am not an expert in finance but I suggest you ask your bank to reschedule your debt payment if that’s possible or you consider selling the equipment we haven’t used for a long time. At least the proceeds will be enough to save the employees temporarily. (Saya tidak tahu karena saya bukan ahli di bidang keuangan tapi saya menyarankan Anda meminta bank Anda untuk skedul ulang pembayara hutang perusahaan atau mempertimbangkan untuk menjual peralatan yang sudah lama tidak kita pakai. Setidaknya hasil penjualan itu akan dapat menyelamatkan karyawan untuk sementara.)
