Pharasal Verb tidak perlu dihafalkan secara khusus, tapi pelajari manakala Anda menemukannya dalam kalimat-kalimat dalam text percakapan atau bacaan. Ingat, pharasal verb adalah kata kerja yang menjadi satu kesatuan dengan kata yang mengikutinya (adverb atau preposition).
Kata-kata yang bertuliskan tebal adalah phrasal verb:
- Have your trousers let out a bit. (Besarkan celana mu sedikit.)
- Are you letting out one of the rooms to students? (Apakah salah satu kamarnya disewakan siswa/mahasiswa?)
- Allow me to think it over.(Think over= mempertimbangkan)
- I am looking forward to hearing from you soon. (look forward to = sangat mengharapkan)
- The bridge was blown up killing many people. (Blown up = diledakkan)
- John blew up at Mary. (blow up = menjadi marah)
- The teacher blew the students up for being late. (blow someone up = memarahi seseorang)
- Hurry up or we will be late. (hurry up = buruan)
- Can you come over to my house tomorrow? (come over = mampir, datang)
- The amount added up to US$100 (add up to = berjumlah)
- The container fell over and broke causing the water to spill out onto the floor. (Wadah itu terjatuh dan pecah menyebabkan air yang ada di dalamnya tumpah ke lantai.)
- Don't forget to close the tap or else the water in the tub will spill over. (spill over = meluap)
- I am rooting for you. Don't worry. (Saya mendukung Anda. Jangan khawatir)
Phrasal verb yang terdiri dari verb + adverb posisinya bisa Verb + Object (Noun or Pronoun) + Adverb atau Verb + Adverb + Object (Nouns Only). Perhatikan juga bahwa Phrasal verb ada yang tidak mempunyai object (intransitive)
Contoh phrasal verb yang mempunyai objek:
- Her mother told Mary off. Her mother told off Mary
- Her mother told her off.
- Let me think over the problem. Let me think it over.
Phrasal verb tanpa objek:
- His car broke down.(break down = mogok)
- It is so sad to hear that their relationship finally broke up.(break up = putus)
- The bomb went off last night.(go off = meledak)
